OHT Translators Seal

Translation, editing, proofreading

By far the most common type of work that is requested. All translated copy is carefully proofread. All general formats (like txt, doc(x), xls(x), rtf, pdf, odt) are handled. The translating process is supported by CAT-tools (WordfastPro).

Preparing subtitle files for videos, with or without translation. Normally a separate file (srt) is created with an integrated timeline.

Typesetting, book/brochure layout

Under this heading, a variety of tasks is completed. From creation of presentations (Powerpoint), figures and drawings (Illustrator), adapting image material (Photoshop) and layout of brochures (InDesign), up to the design and typesetting of entire books. At times, I'm also asked to translate and reconstruct websites (Fireworks, Dreamweaver).

Rates are a very tricky thing to publish on a website. On the other hand, potential clients often expect an insight in the cost structure, before even contacting a translator. But applying rates is so variable in function of the work required that the translator also needs to analyse the proposed work before committing to a price.

Thanks to living in a (still) 'cheap' country, and working from home, I am able to keep living and operating costs at a level that is substantially below the one in Europe or the US. This will be reflected in the price-tag.

Hence, the following are just indicators, always subject to final agreement by both parties.

Proofreading: from $0.02 to $0.05 per word (source).

Translating: from $0.05 to $0.15 per word (source).

Typesetting: from $0.03 to $0.12 per word (target).

Graphical work: between $20 and $30 per hour.
